30 Years

Celebrating 30 Years Serving Walton County!

The Walton County Tourist Development Council (TDC) marked a milestone at the October 2016 Annual Meeting - the county government tourism agency turned 30 years old!

In 1986, Oprah Winfrey was starting a new daytime television program, Halley’s comet streaked across the sky, a nation mourned the Space Shuttle Challenger, and the Chicago Bears won the SuperBowl. Also that year, Van Ness Butler Jr. served as the first chairman of the newly formed Walton County TDC, now also known as Visit South Walton.

In the first year, the new organization collected approximately $150,000 in visitor bed taxes- which continue to solely fund the organization. More recently in 2016, tourism is credited with an economic impact of $3.2 billion in Walton County. Tourism is now responsible for 25,000 local jobs as well!
