Santa Rosa Beach

Founded in 1910 as the center of a thriving turpentine industry, Santa Rosa Beach was the start of South Walton as we know it today. But this community of luxury beach houses, upscale dining, and unique artist colony Gulf Place is certainly not a relic of the past.

In fact, Santa Rosa Beach was named one of the “10 Best Beach Destinations for 2011” by Yahoo! Travel, which praised its “lapping waves and cool sand” and the endless array of outdoor and indoor activities here.

Can you believe a 20-acre horse ranch just steps from the beach? Believe it. Located adjacent to the Point Washington State Forest, Gulfside Trail Rides offers stables, lessons, guided trail rides, and a full service campground. You can even book your romantic rustic barn wedding and ride off into the sunset.

The CAA Stands for ART
Is there a painting inside you demanding to get out? Why not take an art class? The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County supports and promotes the arts and offers classes and workshops at the Bayou Arts Center on north Highway 393. You can also stop in for a peaceful woodsy stroll and enjoy the small art gallery.

Pages From the Past
History hunters will enjoy the Coastal Branch Library located in South Walton’s Town Center on the west side of Highway 331. The library houses a small exhibit of local items from the past that includes pottery shards and arrowheads, a battery from a steamboat, pirate lore, maps, and a variety of items that have washed ashore.

There’s No Place Like Gulf Place
If shopping and dining to the sound of the surf is what you’re after, you need to head to Gulf Place. Just steps away from the beach, this popular entertainment venue features restaurants, unique shops and boutiques, and the Artists at Gulf Place, eight local artists offering pottery, jewelry, photography and wearable art.

Spend the Day at Ed Walline Park
This popular South Walton beach access is always busy and not just because it’s so visible at the south end of County Road 393. It features two picnic shelters, showers, restrooms, parking, an ADA accessible ramp, and an observation platform where you can look for dolphins or watch the sun set.

Do You YOLO? Stand Up Paddle boarding is the rage and a great way to get around the bayous and paddle the gulf waves. YOLO (You Only Live Once) is a Santa Rosa Beach company started by entrepreneurs Jeff Archer and Tom Losee that features comfortable, safe, hybrid long-boards offering a whole new point of view.
